I would enjoy nothing more than to claim that I had this all planned out from the very beginning – the powerful awareness campaign that we’ve put together; the strong partnerships built over these past months; and the very real potential to protect women in significant numbers. But the truth is – helping to protect women of the world was an afterthought when I first had this idea. In the beginning, all I really wanted was to protect just one woman. She didn’t need caring for in the traditional sense of the word. Being a motivated, independent young woman, she knew very well how to take care of herself and make smart choices. Then I realized that sometimes strength of mind and spirit are not enough. And that regardless of a woman’s path in life – whether a student, stay-at-home mom, CEO, or senator, she is still vulnerable to violence against women. I simply could not accept that. I assumed that there must be other people feeling the very same way – about their mothers and daughters, sisters and wives, girlfriends and best friends.
There are stores and websites full of products to keep us entertained and stylish with up-to-date technology, music, and mobiles. When I could not find a single place that did the same for personal safety – I decided to make one: A labor of love to protect one woman, now with the potential to help all. The reason this began wasn’t about making money, making headlines, or even making a difference – it was about making one woman safe. It was about love, actually.
